Reaping the health benefits of socializing, while social distancing!
Hey lovelies! We are living in some unusual times. In the age of Covid-19 it can be hard to maintain a social life. We aren’t able to see friends and family and interact with them the way we would like, and it takes a toll on you both mentally and physically. We have to be innovative, but its worth the effort and your mind and body will reap all of the benefits!
When we engage in social activities our body’s release endorphins such as dopamine and oxytocin. These hormones helps to increase our sense of wellbeing. Socializing has also been related to lowering cortisol levels. Cortisol is the body’s primary stress hormone. Although our bodies needs cortisol for appropriate stress responses; its important to maintain equilibrium. Lowering cortisol levels has many benefits for the mind and body. Including: regulated sleep pattern, weight control, and reducing inflammation within the body which in turn boost the body’s immune response! Laughter, healthy social bonds and even interacting with your pet, releases endorphins and reduces cortisol levels to help your body better regulate the stress response.
Here are some ways to maintain these healthy social interaction while social distancing and get the health benefits in as well:
Scheduling regular phone calls and video calls with loved ones and friends. Scheduling these call within your day can help to ensure you actually keep in touch. It allows for you to make such social interactions a routine, which in turn will also allow the other party to check in on you if you don’t initiate the call as you usually would. “I haven’t heard from ——— let me check in!”
Utilize social media more. Yes, I said more! Not the mindless strolling we tend to fall into, (NO Judgment) I’ve been there, especially as of late. Instead be more intentional with your usage. Intentional use of social media has so many benefits, but in this case it can aid in helping you to feel less isolated. Try using it to check in on friends and family! View life updates of your loved ones and use those opportunities for positive interaction! Im sure it will make them fell loved (endorphins overflow) and it will make you feel less distant.
Now is a good time to consider getting a dog, especially if you live alone. Pets can be great companions and you get those same benefits, (mentioned earlier), from socializing with them as well. They can also give you a reason to get outside if you don’t feel motivated to do so these days.
Have virtual lunch and coffee dates. Socializing over food or coffee is one of my favorite pre covid social activities. Although virtual dates are not quite the same as those intimate meet ups we have in person, you can still make them just as enjoyable! Pick a space: your dining table the island in your kitchen and dress it up! A nice place setting for yourself right in front of your phone or laptop makes it feel more personal. Don’t hesitate to get dressed for the occasion! Invite a few friends, set the time and virtual meeting place and enjoy!
Engage in live workout sessions. Many gyms and personal trainer are offering them. Gyms are social hubs for many of us and with them being closed, that can definitely leave a void in points of social interaction. Do some research and see what works for you! If you have a partner or a group that you would normally workout with, arrange a session with them in a virtual meeting place and sweat it out. Enjoy all the health benefit both for your physical health and mental wellbeing.
